College Climbing Series kicks off its inaugural season in Incline Village

24 college climbers form 4 different schools began the inaugural season of the College Climbing Series in Tahoe at Uprising event at High Altitude Fitness.

Sierra Nevada College, UC Davis, Fresno State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo all came harnessed and ready to compete in the first Northern California Region climbing event.

The individual competition for the Women's division was won by Renee Guay, a Sierra Nevada College student and member at High Altitude Fitness.


"I thought it was amazing. It was my first competition, I was really nervous but the music and the atmosphere really helped me," Guay said.

Guay took first with a a total of 20,900 points, Laura Patton from Cal Poly took second with 19,650 points and Joan Wong took third place with 17,675 points.

On the Men's side Ian Walters from UC Davis took first with 31,075 points and kept the crowd entertained with a couple of wild 5.12 plus lead climbs.

"It was friggin' awesome. Great atmosphere, great routes, extremely nice people. You couldn't have asked for a better competition," Walters said.

The first part of a three-event all-day affair went off without a hitch and owner Jason Burd was pleased with the turnout and outcome.

"We are really gonna have to do this again. It was pretty successful and I was pleased to have Renee (Guay) from our gym win the women's competition." Burd joked "I was a beautiful day to be climbing inside."

In the Men's competition it seemed everyone was chasing Walters. Ryan Taid Mapa took second with 25,825 points and William "Boz" Bazargani from UC Davis took third.
